Joel founded JN Civils in 2010 and has grown it from a start-up into one of the UK’s fastest-developing civil engineering and utilities contractors. His drive and clarity of purpose have shaped the company’s progress for more than 15 years.
Starting his career at the coalface, Joel gained a practical understanding of the industry that continues to guide his leadership. That hands-on experience still anchors the way he builds teams, makes decisions, and ensures projects are delivered safely, on time and to an excellent standard.
As JN Civils has expanded, Joel has formed a strong leadership team, established robust operational systems, and built long-standing client relationships. His ability to spot opportunities, act decisively, and stay focused through challenges has been key to driving the company’s momentum towards becoming the UK’s leading Tier 1 civil engineering contractor.
As one of JN Civils’ longest-serving team members, having joined in 2008. Anthony has more than 18 years of experience across the civil engineering and utilities sectors. He brings an unrivalled depth of operational knowledge spanning every aspect of the business.
Throughout his journey with JN Civils, Anthony has held operational roles across highways, telecoms, gas and infrastructure delivery. This broad experience has given him a practical understanding of how the business works on the ground and a sharp eye for spotting opportunities – solving complex challenges and improving efficiency across multiple work streams.
He now leads JN Civils’ recycling, aggregates, and ready-mix division, a core part of the company’s commitment to sustainability. Antony works closely with civil engineering partners and industry stakeholders to develop circular-economy solutions that keep materials in use for longer, reduce waste, and lower environmental impact.
Driven by a clear vision, Antony is helping position JN Civils as a leader in sustainable resource management, delivering solutions that support the company’s growth while contributing to a more responsible and resilient future for the sector.
Emily brings over two decades of commercial and quantity surveying experience within the utilities sectors. Beginning her career as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor in 2002, she has built an extensive track record working with a range of Tier 1 contractors on major frameworks and long-term programmes.
Throughout her career, Emily has delivered commercial leadership across high-profile contracts for key clients, including United Utilities, Cadent Gas, Openreach, Electricity North West, and Bord Gáis.
This breadth of experience has given her a comprehensive understanding of the commercial and operational demands associated with complex utility environments, as well as the ability to navigate the challenges of large-scale, multi-stakeholder projects.
She is focused on driving sustainable growth and building commercial processes that support the company’s long-term goals. Her work helps ensure JN Civils delivers consistent value to clients while maintaining strong commercial discipline at every level.
Karl is a dynamic and highly experienced operations leader with over 25 years of industry-specific expertise across the telecommunications and civil engineering sectors. His appointment was instrumental in strengthening the company’s operational capabilities and accelerating its growth as a leading contractor.
Having held senior roles with both subcontractors and major principal contractors, he brings a fully rounded view of the industry, from commercial pressures to operational realities and long-term strategy. This blend of experience has been invaluable at JN Civils, helping him introduce Tier 1 standards, disciplines, and delivery frameworks while protecting the agility and responsiveness that define the company’s culture.
Karl fosters accountability and the development of leadership capabilities of those around him. He plays a central role in shaping JN Civils’ operational strategy and ensuring the company is equipped to meet the demands of its growing client base and expanding portfolio of work.
Mike is a seasoned operations leader with more than 20 years of experience in the utilities and civil engineering sectors, delivering large-scale, high-pressure projects across the Northwest. As Director of Operations for Water and Gas at JN Civils, he oversees some of the company’s most complex work streams, leading multidisciplinary teams with a strong focus on safety, quality, and reliable delivery.
His experience includes managing major utility programmes, such as coordinating the renewal of around 250km of gas mains each year, a demanding operation requiring close control of both direct labour and subcontractor teams. Mike’s ability to run projects of this scale while maintaining rigorous standards reflects his deep operational expertise.
Alongside day-to-day delivery, he brings strong strategic insight. He develops practical, data-driven plans that translate business goals into clear actions, balancing performance, cost, and compliance to ensure targets are met responsibly.
Mike is also known for building trusted relationships with clients and delivery partners, helping to establish efficient ways of working that benefit all parties. A firm advocate for safety and team development, he invests heavily in coaching, mentorship and the organic growth of future talent across the business.
Nick joined JN Civils in 2020 with more than a decade of procurement and supply-chain experience across the utilities and construction sectors. He arrived at a key moment for the business, taking on the challenge of building a professional procurement function from the ground up.
Before joining JN Civils, Nick worked as Head Buyer at BORA Construction, supporting major projects across the Northwest, including Barton Square, the Stepping Hill Hospital expansion, and the rapid mobilisation of the NHS Nightingale Hospital in Manchester during the Covid-19 pandemic. That project, delivered under immense pressure, highlighted his ability to coordinate complex supply chains with speed and precision.
Since joining, Nick has transformed JN Civils’ procurement and plant capabilities. He established the company’s first dedicated procurement department and oversaw the expansion of the fleet from 80 to more than 350 vehicles, scaling operations to keep pace with the company’s rapid growth.
Known for his negotiation skills and strategic approach to supplier relationships, Nick focuses on building long-term partnerships that deliver value far beyond cost. His work ensures JN Civils has the equipment, materials, and support it needs to grow sustainably while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and service.
Stephen brings more than 15 years of specialist experience in health, safety, quality, and environmental management across the civil engineering and utilities sectors in both the UK and Australia. He returned to JN Civils as Health and Safety Director after several years working with major international infrastructure organisations.
He first joined JN Civils in 2010, gaining hands-on knowledge of civils and utilities operations before moving to Australia in 2016. There, he held senior safety leadership roles with BSA Limited and NBN Co, where he helped oversee safety for Australia’s largest-ever infrastructure project – the $51 billion National Broadband Network connecting over 8.6 million premises.
Stephen is known for combining strategic vision with practical, on-the-ground understanding. He specialises in building HSEQ systems that not only meet compliance standards but also support better operational performance, proving that safety and productivity can reinforce each other when systems are well designed. His leadership centres on developing strong teams, embedding positive safety culture, and creating frameworks that make safe working the simplest choice.
Since rejoining JN Civils, Stephen has played a key role in modernising the company’s HSEQ systems, strengthening compliance, and helping position JN Civils as a trusted partner for clients who expect the highest safety and quality standards.
James brings almost 30 years of IT experience across infrastructure, service operations, and major digital transformation programmes. His career has taken him from supporting early SAP systems to leading global IT delivery teams across multiple time zones, managing technology budgets of more than $150 million.
He has held several senior roles where he became known for pairing strong technical understanding with clear commercial thinking. Much of his recent career was spent in the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors, delivering complex, high-integrity technology programmes in highly regulated environments such as drug development and clinical trials.
Having lived and worked in Eastern Europe, Germany, and the United States, James has led large 24/7 global support teams and developed a deep appreciation for cultural diversity and operational consistency. His experience has also seen him act as a trusted adviser to senior leadership teams on technology investment, risk, and long-term digital strategy.
In 2024, James joined JN Civils as Director of Technology. Since then, he has been leading a rapid modernisation of the company’s tech landscape, strengthening infrastructure, improving security, and aligning IT systems and processes with the business’s long-term goals.
Peter has over 35 years’ experience in civil engineering, construction and utilities across the UK and Channel Islands. Starting out as a Site Engineer, he worked his way up through Site Manager and Contracts Manager roles before becoming a Divisional Director.
He has delivered major infrastructure projects worth up to £50 million, working with clients such as United Utilities, the Environment Agency, Electricity North West, Guernsey Electricity, Cadent, British Waterways, Highways England, Network Rail and many local authorities. Alongside this, he has worked with contractors and private clients across sectors from energy to commercial development.
Since joining JN Civils in 2020, he has drawn on wide experience across heavy civils, reinforced concrete structures, highways, tunnels, power and renewable schemes, environmental works and all aspects of water infrastructure.
With more than two decades as a company director, he combines commercial strength with a deep understanding of project delivery and contract management under NEC, JCT and FIDIC. He is known for his practical leadership, strong people skills and commitment to developing teams and maintaining high standards of safety, quality and performance.
Matt has over 15 years’ experience in the motor trade, specialising in aftersales and workshop operations for leading commercial vehicle brands, most recently Mercedes-Benz. His background spans the management of internal fleets and external maintenance programmes, giving him a strong grasp of vehicle reliability, cost control and service performance.
Alongside his automotive expertise, Matt brings hands-on civils experience from his time working within JN Civils. This practical understanding helps him align fleet strategy with real site needs and the day-to-day challenges faced by operational teams.
As Fleet Director, Matt leads JN Civils’ fleet strategy, compliance and continuous improvement. He is focused on strengthening governance, modernising systems and developing a consistent approach to fleet operations across the business. His goal is to build a safer, more efficient and future-ready fleet that underpins the company’s ongoing growth.
